Oelmuehle Deerhounds – The Beginning

There are many nice people who deserve to get in contact with the deerhound, but somehow they never manage to. The deerhound is a very special breed and so is the breeder. The dog is devoted to man by nature ñ which many a breeder is not. So the acquisition of a deerhound can turn into a quite complicated affair.
At dog shows the criteria of judging were sometimes arbitrary, as if a breed standard did not exist. Deerhounds are special and so are their owners. There was this great Championship-Show in Wales in fearful weather: it poured. Only one breed was judged outside the inviting marquees which shows that their owners are great characters like their hounds: unadapted in their noble, gentle romantic roughness.
Our aim is to introduce human characters to these wonderful creatures. Of course they will never reach the popularity of many other breeds. Therefore deerhounds are all the more precious.
Our advice to the newcomer is to train his eye and sensitivity and to begin with the best, especially when venturing into breeding. It is best to start all over again and not simply take one's first favourite hound onto the often treacherous rath of breeding. The quality known as "Eye" or "Touch" is the right equipment for the prospective breeder. A slumbering talent, yet seldom awakened.

In the late sixties we were breeding basset hounds, a jolly moderately active breed. In addition Jürgen Rösner owned a lovely black poodle from his childhood days which came to reach the venerable age of 16 years.

During our annual gardentours to England we regularly visited some of the agricultural country shows offering a colourful picture of country life and the variety among cattle breeds. Some open shows also exhibited dogs. It was on one of these occasions that we met our first deerhound, a powerful, consistent dog, looking very seriously but with a gentle expression amidst lots of coat and mane.

This first and only specimen made a lasting impression but nothing much came of it. The owners gave us the name of the breed though no further clue.

But we did find a book: HOW TO RAISE AND TRAIN A DEERHOUND
We liked the ancient appearance of the breed, but some other impressions came along and pushed this encounter to the bade of the memory. We turned over our minds to other things Near the home of some English friends of our's in Hertfordshire lived Ruth and Leslie Jenkins of Wolfhounds of Eaglescrag fame. The rest of the story is well-known.

It was the detour via the Irish Wolfhounds that brought us closer to the related breed of deerhounds again. At one of his birthdays Jürgen Papenfuß was given famous "Ch Ardkinglas Zamora" (younger sister of "Ardkinglas Zuleika").

She had had a litter in"Shamrock" Kennel before. Along with "Zamora" her son"Ch Shamrock Cormac" came to live with us. At once they attacked and pulled our favourite cat. Luckily they did not pull in different directions, so the cat was left unharmed. Prompt reprimand settled the affair and cat and dogs became lifelong friends.

Since we had no intention to breed deerhounds we temporarily gave "Möhrchen" (her nick name) to "Quodlibet" Kennel to have one litter.

After her litter with "Quodlibet" "Zamora" returned in splendid shape and carrying plenty of timber. She reached the good ripe age of 14 years, 1 month. Her show-results included: German and International Champion, Europa-Sieger, Bundessieger (twice), Bundessieger (Austria), World Champion (twice), etc., in all 20 titles.
In October 1986 we had our first deerhound-litter from "Ch. Bedley of Baskerville" ("Ch. Highstone Nutcracker"+"Ch Shamrock Cormac"), after "Ch. Elliot vom Welzerberg" ("Amorous" /"Bird of the Scottish Highlands").

We soon acquired "Ch. Highstone Nutcracker", who later allowed for the Kennel "of Baskerville" a promising start. She was a rather powerful, big type, while "Zamora" was rather small and graceful but with an almost perfect anatomy of unique angulations and outlines. She possessed great racing passions and was so very fast on the track that she ocassionally caught the hare when the man in the tower was idling.
Later we acquired deerhounds from other kennels:

1) Ardkinglas, Britain
2) Baskerville, Germany
3) Bellanagare, Netherlands
4) Highstone, USA
5) Kilbourne, Britain
6) Pitlochry's, Netherlands
7) Secretis, Germany
8) Shanid, USA
In 1991 our american import "Ch. Shanid Francesca" mated to "Express von der Oelmühle" gave us the I-litter. Four champions emerged from this litter: "Ira", "Irma la douce", "Iwana" and "I-Punkt". They are still with their owners and three of them were foundation bitches for young kennels.

In the same year we imported "Ch. Ardkinglas Norma" from Scotland. She was in whelp with the well-known "Ch. Strammwith Reason" as stud dog. This combination gave us four champions: "Jerem"î, "Jaques", "Joy" and "Jessy", followed by other show-titles like Bundessieger, Europasieger, Verbandsieger.

Equally successful was our K-litter by "Ch. Kilbourne Opal" x "Ch. Pitlochry's Cormac" — "Ch. Kylemore", "Ch. Kevin", "Ch. Karina" and "Ch. Kala von der Oelmühle".
The combination of "Fritzens Anna" and "Ch. Guilliary Pickled Pepper" (the sire was 10 years on the day of mating), resulted in an astonishing litter of 19 puppies (11 were eventually raised. Five puppies from this litter became champions: Dutch "Ch. Max", Polish "Ch. Moritz", German "Ch. Malte", German and Finnish "Ch. Mecky", German "Ch. Mabel"and were bred from.
""Jaques" and "Ester von der Oelmühle" had an O-litter that included "Oscarî"and "Odette" as further champions, while "Jaques" and "Pitlochry's Belle" produced their P-litter, "Ch. Pleasure von der Oelmühle", who did great things in the Dutch Kennel of "Pitlochry's"

Here is a list of further champions both national and international or of dogs who gained titles like BS, ES, VS: * Terence, * Urania, * Viva (USA Ch.), * Walnut, * William, * Zatopek (Multi Ch.), *Air France (Multi Ch.), * Angel face (USA Ch.), * Cream Cracker (USA Ch.), * Duke of Windsor, * Eagle, * Essence, * General (USA Ch.), * Gloria, * Fashion Flame (USA Ch.)

Our imports "Ardkinglas Euston", "Ardkinglas Norma", "Kilbourne Opal", "Kilbourne Andrew of Oelmühle", "Kilbourne Carolina", "Kilbourne Flame" and"Kilbourne Velvet" (she had also been U.K. Ch.). All became champions eventually.
Our last import from the U.K. "Ch. Kilbourne Luffa of Oelmühle", was Papenfuß's puppy for Christmas 1997. The dog though continued to his developing years with his breeder in Derbyshire, where he started his show-career through all classes, handled by his breeders or by us, starting with "best puppy". His first CC & BOB was gained at the LKA 99, handled by Jürgen Rösner. Cruft's 2000 and Bath 2000 were further stations and the last of his five CC's and BOB's was awarded at the hound-show 2000 with over 150 deerhounds entered. On the continent he continued his successful career with 5 CAC's, 5 CACIB's, Bundessieger, Austrian Bundessieger, three times second in group, one first in group and one BIS. "Luffa" is a dignified representative of the breed with all the lovable characteristics of deerhounds. The great deerhound enthusiast, Kenneth Cassels, saw in a romantic light, even gave his book over deerhounds the title: "A Most Perfect Creature of Heaven!"
